Spencer and I attended Lego Kids Fest in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, October 8th. We were on the road before dawn for the first session which started at 9am. Arriving early, we stopped at Dunkin Donuts and split a half dozen with some coffee.
The festival was for all ages which included games, challenges, seminars, a retail store, life size models and the free build. Building from scratch is my favorite, so we spent time in the monochrome section where you had only one style brick to build your creation.
Most of the models were buildings and structures, Spencer built a nice skyscraper, but I decided on slapping together a droid. I started from the ground up and used the foot for scale.
When the foot and leg started to take shape, folks either asked or started to recognize what we were attempting. Of course, I had to make it complicated by throwing in angles using rectangular bricks, but I had to make it look authentic.
In a little I've an hour, we had successfully built everyone's favorite droid R2-D2. Folks were very impressed and kids were having their parents take photos with R2. Even a Lego Master Builder took a few picks and complimented our creation. I asked about his career and he proceeded to explain his position to Spencer and another boy at length, then I politely said "I was actually asking for me."
After that, we walked around then bought a couple of Lego sets. Jumped back in the car and headed back to Roanoke. Funny, I think there were as many dads having as much or even more fun than kids. I need to write and suggest perhaps a Lego Dads Beer Fest just for adults :)
